The thing that we learnt in class.

Right, we're supposed to blog about what we learnt in class right. Hmm this will be a bit tough. Lemme think.

I'll start from how I felt about this module in the first place.

I was pretty sceptical about NCT because I am a very un-techy person. I don't mind using technology, but I prefer for it to come to me rather than I actively search for it. I kinda dreaded the whole technology-based module idea, seriously, seriously. (Sorry ah, NCT Tutor. You know I love you XD)

But the first day we got to watch Minority Report!!!! Haha... That was the first thing that made me perk up. What I didn't expect was that after the movie, I would be so interested in the issues encircling privacy and security, after we discussed the future of such stuff in class. I was never really conscious of the fact that it was all around us and how people are hyper-sensitive to human rights and privacy issues. (My essay is gonna be about privacy and security too.) It was like a slap in the face, somewhat, because a lot of things I've been doing haven't really been in the interests of protecting my privacy.

I didn't know that there was so much going on in the world that could invade the privacy of everybody in the universe. Things like VeriChips (I am EXTREMELY interested in this, but I won't go into why) and biometrics that have gone beyond your usual thumbprint sometimes scare me, but enthrall me. NCT Lecturer's tip on how the microphone picks up the sounds in the room to decipher what you're doing are also in the same vein of scariness.

I feel that that's the greatest lesson that I've taken from NCT. Now for some links!

My favourite thing to discuss: VeriChips. Don't think it will stop at tagging only pets.

If you just think about the significance of such a technology... Go watch the videos too. You think eZlink in cellphone is very creative right? Think about how the VeriChip, which can be implanted IN YOUR HAND, can make passports, eZlink cards, credit cards and whatever-cards obsolete. You think it's not possible, we'll just wait around and see what happens in 50 years :)
