The wonders of social networking sites

Yes, the earth’s shrinking… No, we are not approaching dooms day yet. I mean shrinking in the technology terms. I learnt that we are all connected, all linked. The rise of social networking sites! A knows B, C and D individually… Then, D knows Z who is also a friend of C who also knows X. Haha. It’s getting confusing… but you all know what I mean. So, how do we know we are all linked? Well, that’s the wonders of social networking sites.

First, we have friendster. One of the oldest and also the first social networking site I joined. Click on ‘how are you’re connected’ and you will know which of your friends know this person too! At first, I was rather amazed by that function. Friendster showed me how many primary and secondary degree friends I have. And the number just keeps increasing. But somehow, we all (or rather myself) got bored of Friendster and moved on to Facebook.

I have never joined any other social networking sites after Friendster until we are encouraged to join Facebook in NCT. I thought it would be no difference from Friendster, but I was wrong. Social networking sites have evolved! Facebook has million types of applications for you to add. Send gifts, messages, adopt a pet, fight or battle with other zombies, vampires or slayers, etc. No wonder Facebook is the most popular website among users in UK and US. Students and office executives visit Facebook whenever they have time (even if they don’t, they will try to make time for it) simply to see the number of messages, gifts they have received. Isn’t it ridiculous?!

In Facebook, friends whom you have lost contact with could be easily found using the friend finder. These people and also those whom you are not so close with could just come up to you and throw sheep, pumpkin, cow or even slap you. Join them in battling other slayers or vampires. Then, you will start wondering when are we so close in real life.
Being so closely connected can be convenient but also scary. You need not trouble your friends to introduce you to another person. Simply by a few clicks, you can add someone as your friend on these social networking sites. Read up your profile and others would know your interests, personality, etc. Someone you don’t know can easily stalk you. They would probably learnt about your school, class, favourite hangouts. Then, you will never know what happens next… This issue is then closely linked to privacy… Our privacy is invaded because the world is too small. We have NO privacy! Anyone can learn about you unless you stay at home and do nothing. But that is impossible to do. So, be careful whom you are connected to…
